Can I Understand The Bible? One of the complaints that has often been voiced against the Bible is that it is too hard for the common man to understand. This misunderstanding has been fostered by religious denominations, which require their clergy to attend years of seminary training before being allowed to preach in their churches. This naturally gives rise to the understanding that the Bible is just too difficult for the "person in the pew" to understand. In some denominations, the discouragement of Bible study has been even more blatant. Some have discouraged Bible study, insisting that the minister or priest (as official representatives of the church) is uniquely qualified to interpret the Bible for the masses. In contrast to these denominational traditions, the Bible teaches that God revealed the Bible to be understood by all who desire to know the truth. Jesus said, "Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied" (Matthew 5:6). The apostle Paul wrote, "So then do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is" (Ephesians 5:17). Again Paul said, "When you read you can understand my insight into the mystery of Christ" (3:4). Please study these two passages from the book of 2 Timothy:
These passages are powerful indeed. They clearly teach that God intended for His Word to be read, studied, understood, and obeyed. As the Psalmist wrote, "Thy word is a lamp to my feet, and a light to my path" (Psalm 119:105). A lamp illuminates, lightens up a room, enable us to see things that were previously in darkness. God's Word could not be considered a lamp at all, if it is too difficult for us to understand. Jesus, speaking to the common people of His day, said,
