Once You Are Saved, Can You Lose Your Salvation?

It is a standard doctrine in many churches that once an individual has been saved, they cannot ever again lose their salvation. This doctrine has been called, "Impossibility of apostasy," or, "Once saved, always saved." Such a conclusion would indeed be comforting as we live in this life, but does the Bible support such a conclusion?

As with every Bible question, it is vital that we examine the Word of God carefully for our answer. A number of passages exist on this important subject. Please notice the passages below and study them carefully and prayerfully. (1 Corinthians 9:27, 10:12, Galatians 5:4, 1 Timothy 4:1-3, 2 Timothy 2:17-18, Hebrews 3:12, 6:4-6, 10:26-30, James 5:19-20, 2 Peter 2:20-21, 3:17)

An example of a believer who fell away is found in Acts 8 - the story of Simon the Sorcerer (8:9-24). Along with other citizens of Samaria, Simon was impressed with the miracles of Philip, believed his preaching concerning the gospel, and was baptized for the remission of his sins (vs. 12-13, Acts 2:38).

But in the days that followed, Simon fell into temptation. He saw that the miraculous gifts of the Holy Spirit could be received through the laying on of the apostle's hands. He offered the apostles money that he likewise might have this gift, but Peter rebuked him sharply saying,

Your money perish with you, because you have thought that the gift of God may be purchased with money! You have neither part nor portion in this matter, for your heart is not right in the sight of God. Repent therefore of this your wickedness, and pray God if perhaps the thought of your heart may be forgiven you. For I perceive that you are poisoned by bitterness and bound in iniquity. (Acts 8:21-23)

There can be no doubt about the condition of Simon's soul at this point. Once forgiven, and in fellowship with God, he was now "bound in iniquity." His heart was "not right" in the sight of God, and he needed to repent of his wickedness. Thankfully, Simon repented (vs. 24), and returned to a saved condition before God.

Yes, a careful examination of the New Testament can lead to no other conclusion than that a child of God can indeed fall from grace.
