Man Shall Not Live By Bread Alone
Have you ever been so hungry that you would have done almost anything to get something to eat? Esau, the oldest son of Isaac and Rebekah, was so hungry that he sold his birthright to his younger brother Jacob for a meal of vegetables (Genesis 25). Now imagine the hunger of Jesus after he had gone without food for forty days. On that occasion, Satan tempted him by saying, "If you are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread" (Matthew 4:3). Jesus answered the Devil with these words, "It is written, man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God" (vs. 4).

With this statement in mind, please permit me two observations. First of all, it is obvious to all that mankind needs physical bread to sustain physical life. But there is “bread” that is more important than physical bread – and that is the spiritual bread which feeds our eternal souls. Jesus knew the spiritual needs of the people of His generation, but the Bible has been preserved by the providence of God because people today still have these same spiritual needs. If we try to live without a daily feeding upon the Word of God, we will “starve to death” spiritually. Jesus is the "bread of life" that God sent from heaven to nourish our souls (John 6:35).

Secondly, Jesus said that man shall not live by bread alone, but by "every word that proceeds from the mouth of God". Jesus said we need “every” word of God. Man cannot pick and choose like we do at a buffet that has many kinds of food. We cannot decide which part of God's Word we want to obey, and which part we will disregard because it doesn't suit our personal philosophy. Every word of God is inspired, profitable, and necessary to furnish us completely to every good work (2 Timothy 3:16-17).

Remember, man shall not live by physical bread alone, but by EVERY WORD that proceeds from the mouth of GOD! Study God’s Word carefully and prayerfully. If we can aid you in any way, please contact us today.
