Is There More Than One Way To Heaven?

One of the hallmarks of our present day American culture, is the desire to be inclusive whenever possible. An honoring of diversity, and a spirit of acceptance for all peoples, cultures, and beliefs is a staple of our age. Such a attitude is not necessarily bad, and in fact is enlightening and commendable in many areas of life.

But this philosophy can go too far, if it causes one to conclude that "one religion is as good as another." Some have concluded that it matters little which prophet or religious teacher (Mohammed, Confucius, Moses, Jesus, etc.) one follows, for "all roads lead to heaven." Is this true? What does the Bible teach about the way to heaven?

God's Word reveals that there is only one individual who has been ordained by God to be the Savior of mankind. From the foundation of the world, God initiated a plan for the salvation of His creation (1 Peter 1:18-20). In what has often been called the Golden Text of the Bible, John wrote,

For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. (John 3:16)

The Bible says that Jesus is the one and only Savior of the world. Jesus himself said, "If you do not believe that I am He, you will die in your sins" (John 8:24). Again Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me." (John 14:6). Notice the clarity and strength of His statement: "No one comes to the Father except through me."

The apostle Peter expressed the same truth when he told the Jewish Sanhedrin, "Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved." (Acts 4:12)

Because of our estranged condition of sinfulness before God, man needed a mediator to approach God on his behalf. The mediator that God ordained was Jesus Christ. "For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus, who gave Himself a ransom for all" (1 Timothy 2:5-6).

Jesus did something that no other human being could do - He gave His sinless life as a substitute for sinful mankind (2 Corinthians 5:21, 1 John 2:1-2). By so doing, He became the Savior of the world, and our only access to the throne of God (Romans 5:1-2). The only "road to God" is through Jesus Christ.
